Idea that only graduates are well-paid needs to change: Shanmugam

The Law and Foreign Affairs Minister also touched on the HDB Lease Buyback scheme when speaking at a special forum about the National Day Rally. Catch the show on Vasantham on Wednesday, 9pm.

SINGAPORE: Whether Singaporeans make use of the Lease Buyback scheme or not will depend on their financial capabilities, said Law and Foreign Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam.

Speaking to reporters at the recording of MediaCorp's Tamil current affairs programme, Ethiroli's National Day Rally Forum, he said that extending the plan to four-room HDB flats will definitely be well-received by Singaporeans. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had announced at the National Day Rally on Sunday (Aug 17) that the HDB will extend the Lease Buyback scheme to four-room flats to enable more Singaporeans to monetise their assets and derive a steady stream of income for their retirement needs.

Mr Lee had also outlined how Singaporeans can attain success through different routes, regardless of their academic qualifications. During the forum, Mr Shanmugam spoke about the perception that only graduates are well-paid and have chances of promotion. He said this idea that has taken root in the minds of many Singaporeans has to be changed, but this will take time.

The Special Forum will be telecast this Wednesday (Aug 20) at 9pm on Vasantham.
