Interactive exhibitions to mark 30th year of Total Defence

Among the highlights to mark the 30th year of Total Defence is a nine-day exhibition at the National Museum of Singapore, where visitors are set to experience interactive exhibitions related to Total Defence.

SINGAPORE: This year’s theme for the 30th anniversary of Total Defence will be “Because you played a part”.

The theme was unveiled on Tuesday at the National Museum of Singapore, by Nexus -- a department within the Ministry of Defence, and is responsible for Total Defence and National Education.

Among the highlights is a nine-day exhibition which will take place from February 15 at the National Museum of Singapore. There will be interactive displays featuring stories of everyday Singaporeans, aimed at helping visitors reflect on Total Defence.

There will also be a walking trail, which takes participants back to 1942, when Singapore fell to the Japanese.

Visitors to the museum can also watch a forum theatre performance, titled "Wouldn't It Be Nice," during the nine days. Members of the audience will be invited to take part in the play and share their views during the play.

Colonel Roland Ng, director of Nexus, said: "In the past, when we grew up, we have our grandparents telling us stories. We say that they're grandfather stories but really, they're powerful, and we remember.

"We are using stories to make a personal connection so that when they see these stories, they are inspired in their own way to contribute to Total Defence."

Another highlight is the thank-you card movement. Members of the public can pick up cards from selected shops and cafes across Singapore, and pen messages to people or organisations that have contributed to Total Defence.
