Governing body for sports, Sport Singapore, is taking over the management of the building from February next year.
SINGAPORE: Kallang Theatre could in the near future become a venue for sports events, as Sport Singapore is taking over the management of the building from February next year.
Kallang Theatre is currently being managed by arts event management company Asia Arts & Culture. Since 2011, it has been renting the premises from the Singapore Land Authority for a monthly fee of S$43,000. The lease expires on January 31 next year.
The Singapore Land Authority and Sport Singapore said they will unveil future plans for the theatre once they have been finalised.
One analyst said that the space could be used to hold sports events.
David Poh, managing director of PropNex, said: "Kallang Theatre is in a very, very prime location, because it's right inside, or beside Sports Hub. This will actually be prime land for Sports Hub for any expansion programme.
“I foresee that there are a few things that Sport Singapore can do. First, they probably will actually take over, and convert it into a venue for small sports events, for example, for fencing competitions. They can maybe do some modification to the building - they take away the stage, they remove some chairs, so there's an arena in the front for competition, space for the audience behind.
“Secondly, they probably have bigger plans. If you take a look, Kallang Theatre, with the open space car park beside it, offers land for future development for Sports Hub. So they may have plans to build more sports facilities."
