SINGAPORE: Singapore's birthday bash is next week but celebrations have already started in the heartlands. The Kolam Ayer division held its National Day Observance Ceremony at Kallang Bahru on Saturday afternoon (Aug 2).

About 600 residents and 200 performers participated in the celebrations. Popular National Day songs were performed, and dance and uniformed groups from schools in the area also took part in the event.

Joining residents was Communications and Information Minister Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, who is also the MP for Moulmein-Kallang GRC. In a speech, Dr Yaacob said as Singapore celebrates its 49th birthday, it is timely to review the nation's past achievements and struggles, and also to envision Singapore's future.

He said: "I think the three things we must remember is to look back at our past achievements, our past struggles, to celebrate our present achievements for where we are, and to be thankful that we have safety, security as compared to other places in the world such as the Middle East and Ukraine, and then to look forward to the next 50 years - what kind of nation we want to create out of Singapore."
