After a disappointing 2014 Malaysian Super League campaign for LionsXII, coach Fandi Ahmad expects another tough challenge in the Malaysia Cup this season.
SINGAPORE: Local football club LionsXII hosted 20 young fans to a training session at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Monday (Aug 11). Motivation from these fans may well help spur the Lions to score more goals.
According to coach Fandi Ahmad, the lack of goals was one of the main reasons for the team's poor league season. The Lions endured a disappointing 2014 Malaysian Super League campaign, in which the boys finished eighth among 12 teams.
He expects another tough challenge in the Malaysia Cup this season. The knock-out tournament kicks off next Wednesday. In its opening match, LionsXII will play against Felda FC.
Of the team's preparations for the Malaysia Cup, Fandi said: "We did not have a good preparation because at least half of the team was travelling to Austria. The other half we just had some local games and we do not really know their fitness level."
Football Association of Singapore President Zainudin Nordin remained optimistic: “We are confident that the boys will probably clear the first round". After that, however, "anything can happen", he acknowledged.
