Popular Malay entertainer Kartina Dahari died on Wednesday, after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2010. She was 73 years old.

SINGAPORE: Popular Malay entertainer Kartina Dahari died on Wednesday, after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2010. She was 73 years old.

Kartina Dahari was best known for her song "Sayang Di Sayang" (Lover is Loved).

The song was composed by National Anthem composer, the late Zubir Said.

She was also the face and voice of Malay television and radio from the 1960s to the 1980s.

She received many awards throughout her illustrious career, including the Artistic Excellence Award by The Composers and Authors Society of Singapore in 2010 and MediaCorp Suria's "Perdana Emas" or Golden Award in 2009, which was presented by former president S R Nathan.

Kartina was also known as the queen of keroncong, a traditional Malay folk music genre.

Her last public appearance was at a special tribute concert for her at the Esplanade last year.

Kartina was also the first Malay singer to record English songs, coming up with two singles, four EPs and two LPs.

She leaves behind three children and three grandchildren.
