Malaysian police Special Branch director awarded Meritorious Service Medal

The award recognises Akhil Bulat's outstanding role and commitment in developing ties between the Malaysia Special Branch and Singapore's Internal Security Department.

SINGAPORE: President Tony Tan Keng Yam has conferred the Pingat Jasa Gemilang (Meritorious Service Medal) on Akhil Bulat, Director of the Special Branch for the Royal Malaysia Police.

The award was presented to him by Deputy Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister for National Security and Home Affairs Minister Teo Chee Hean at the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Thursday (Aug 14).

An MHA news release says the award is a recognition of Mr Akhil’s outstanding role and commitment in developing the ties between the Malaysia Special Branch (MSB) and the Internal Security Department (ISD) in Singapore, and his significant contributions to the security of Malaysia, Singapore and the region.

MHA also said under Mr Akhil's leadership, the relationship between the MSB and ISD has grown even closer, characterised by substantive exchanges of counter-terrorism intelligence and cooperation in security investigations.

"The successful repatriation to Singapore of several Singaporean Jemaah Islamiyah and Moro Islamic Liberation Front members apprehended in Malaysia is a testament of Datuk Seri Akhil Bulat’s commitment to working closely with Singapore, especially against the terrorism threat," MHA said.
