Man who tried to rob woman with penknife caught

Police on Monday arrested a would-be armed robber who rode up to a victim on his motorcycle and allegedly threatened her with a penknife.

SINGAPORE: Police on Monday arrested a would-be armed robber who rode up to a victim on his motorcycle and allegedly threatened her with a penknife.

The 26-year-old suspect had spotted the victim walking along a pavement near Mount Emily Road on June 10.

While pointing the penknife at her and demanding that she hand over her valuables, he lost his balance, and the victim fled. The man then escaped on his motorcycle and left Singapore.

However, police recovered from the scene what is believed to be the motorcycle's foot-rest which had broken off.

The man was arrested at Woodlands Immigration Checkpoint when he tried to re-enter Singapore on Monday.

He will be charged on Tuesday and faces between two and seven years' jail, as well as at least 18 strokes of the cane for attempted armed robbery.
