Man with psychosis jailed 26 months after assaulting, stealing from mother

Mdm Manikan Santanaletchmi experienced swelling in her face, and had bruises on her legs and blurred vision in her right eye after the attack.

SINGAPORE: A man who has been diagnosed with a psychotic disorder was jailed 26 months by the district court on Thursday (June 26) after he assaulted his elderly mother and stole her valuables.

On Feb 5, Yogaraj Arumugam, 33, became unhappy after Mdm Manikan Santanaletchmi asked him a question. He then repeatedly hit her on the back of her head and taped her mouth shut. She later locked herself in the bedroom.

For about two and a half hours, the 62-year-old woman, who was in pain, did not receive any help as no one else was at home. It was only later when her elder son came home that Mdm Manikan opened the bedroom door to tell him what had happened.

Mdm Manikan experienced swelling in her face, and had bruises on her legs and blurred vision in her right eye after the attack.

During the assault, Yogaraj also stole S$1,707 in valuables which included two handphones and two gold chains with pendants and some cash.
