MediShield Life coverage important for Malay community: Yaacob Ibrahim

The MediShield Life's provision of universal coverage is important for the Malay-Muslim community in Singapore, given the health issues faced by many of its members, said Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Yaacob Ibrahim.

SINGAPORE: The MediShield Life's provision of universal coverage is important for the Malay-Muslim community in Singapore, given the health issues faced by many of its members, said Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Yaacob Ibrahim.

He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a community event on Sunday.

Dr Yaacob said: "At the same time, it (MediShield Life) takes in patients with existing health conditions. We know that there are a lot of Malays within our community who face certain health challenges and (it) will be difficult for them to get insurance coverage. Now with MediShield Life, that will be covered."

The minister also said the subsidies to be given out by the government will be reassuring for the Malay-Muslim community.

He noted that the Health Ministry had said some two-thirds of households from the low- and middle- income groups will receive the subsidies.

Dr Yaacob was attending the Exemplary Father Award 2014, which was organised by Malay-Muslim group AIN Society.
