SINGAPORE: In the Sembawang area, 2,196 students will receive their Edusave Awards over two days.
This is an increase from last year's 1,684 recipients.
National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan handed out the awards to some 1,000 students on Saturday.
Mr Khaw, who is also MP for Sembawang GRC, will give all the awards over two days in seven sessions.
Students received four types of awards, depending on their performance in school.
Some received the Edusave Merit Bursaries, while others the Edusave Character or Good Progress Award.
Parents were also recognised for the first time in the constituency’s awards, in an appreciation ceremony .
Students were given wish cards, on which they wrote what they appreciated about their parents.
Rex Chng, an award recipient from Chongfu School, said: "I want to thank my parents for teaching and encouraging me so that I can get good results. I am happy to have a S$100 cheque."
Harshad Ram, award recipient from St Gabriel’s Primary School, said: "I'm very happy about my award. I want to thank my parents, teachers and also my brother for helping me out so much. My award is only (possible) because of them and I really thank them a lot."
