MUIS-Mendaki committee to tap various platforms to honour pioneers

The joint committee to honour the pioneer generation in the Malay-Muslim community will look at both existing and new platforms to recognise the contributions of pioneers, as well as disseminate details of the Pioneer Generation Package.

SINGAPORE: The joint committee to honour the pioneer generation in the Malay-Muslim community will look at both existing and new platforms to recognise the contributions of pioneers, as well as disseminate details of the Pioneer Generation Package (PGP).

This was shared by Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob, who is leading the joint committee at its inaugural meeting on Wednesday.

Existing platforms include tapping on large-scale events organised by MUIS and Mendaki, or smaller events organised by Malay-Muslim organisations.

Mdm Halimah added that these organisations could even have their own initiatives to recognise pioneers.

She said many ideas have been raised during the meeting and the committee will have to evaluate these suggestions before implementing any of them.

A challenge, however, will be to communicate the message in an effective and simple way to pioneers.

The joint committee's members are made up of both veteran and young community leaders. It has been set up for a two year period.

Mdm Halimah said: "It's not just the dissemination of the PGP, it's not just about having a commemorative book or organising some events for pioneers."

"At the end of the day, I think it's creating society-wide support and recognition for pioneers, and what it means for them to be in our midst, the kind of respect and support we should give to them."
