National Youth Council to become national body championing youth affairs

Formerly under the People's Association, the NYC will become an autonomous agency under the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY).

SINGAPORE: The National Youth Council (NYC) will be restructured into an autonomous agency and placed under the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY).

The announcement was made on Friday (June 13) at the inaugural Singapore Youth Conference and is aimed to strengthen the NYC to be the national body in coordinating holistic youth development, the ministry said. The NYC was formerly under the People's Association (PA).

Adventure group Outward Bound Singapore (OBS), with is expertise in adventure-based experiential learning, will also be part of the restructured NYC, the MCCY said in a statement.

Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Lawrence Wong said: "I envisage the revamped NYC as a national body to champion and oversee youth affairs. As the national coordinator for youth development programmes, the NYC will be a bridge that works with government agencies, community partners and youth sector organisations, both large and small, established and new, to drive holistic youth development."

Among some of the plans is the continuing engagement of volunteers through Youth Corps Singapore to build youth capacity through structured training programme. More than 90 youths of the pilot intake will begin the first phase of their training programme in mid-June, the ministry added.

An advisory committee - comprising 12 representatives and chaired by Minister of State for National Development Mr Desmond Lee - has also been set up to provide guidance to the volunteer youth corps.

The new Youth Corps Singapore logo was also unveiled today at the conference.
