SINGAPORE: Nearly 1,800 participants took to the East Coast Park on Saturday to compete in the Singapore International Triathlon 2013.
The elite men's category featured 41 triathletes from more than 15 countries.
Seventeen triathletes took part in the elite women's category.
Six athletes - the top 3 in the men's elite category as well as the top 3 in the women's elite event - will share US$10,000 prize money, plus valuable points that will go towards their International Triathlon Union (ITU) rankings.
The course featured a 1.5-kilometre swim, a 20-kilometre cycle and finally, a gruelling 10-kilometre run to the finish.
The Singapore heat took its toll on a few participants.
In the end, 27-year-old Chika Sato from Japan won the women's event with a time of two hours and 13 minutes.
In the men's competition, 21-year-old Benjamin Shaw from Ireland crossed the finishing line first with a time of one hour and 57 minutes.
