New career track for SMRT train staff

SMRT has launched a new progressive career track for some of its train staff, with an eye on ramping up its operational and engineering capability of its workforce and increasing the service reliability of the MRT network.

SINGAPORE: SMRT has launched a new progressive career track for some of its train staff, with an eye on ramping up its operational and engineering capability of its workforce and increasing the service reliability of the MRT network.

The transport operator on Wednesday (July 9) announced the "SMRT Trains Career Scheme", which will impact about 4,000 of its staff. They include workers who operate passenger trains and stations, systems and engineering personnel, and those who maintain rolling stock and supporting infrastructure such as railway tracks as well as power and signalling systems.

Some of the jobs will have new specialist grades or titles, and fresh roles will be created for workers with many years of experience and have undergone rigorous training. Non-graduate staff who join SMRT at entry-level positions, but who perform well enough, will now have the chance to be promoted to managerial roles.

The scheme is the result of a collaboration with the National Transport Workers' Union, and builds on the progressive wage model introduced last year for all SMRT bus captains.
