'Picnic in the Park - Under the Gelam Trees' offers a space for Kampong Glam residents to relax and break fast.
SINGAPORE: Kampong Glam residents now have a new space to relax or even break fast this Ramadan. Called 'Picnic in the Park - Under the Gelam Trees', the project features the Sultan Gate open space spruced up with benches and garden swings.
The park measures some 1,200 square metres - about the size of two basketball courts - and is one of the many upcoming public space projects planned under the PubliCity initiative by the Urban Redevelopment Authority.
The project will run till August 25, but restaurant owners in the area are asking for it to be made a permanent fixture.
There are some 10 restaurants in the area and since the park's opening on Monday (July 14), at least one is seeing improved business.
"You can see that there's a big crowd around,” said Ahmad Mohamed, the business development manager at Mamanda Restaurant. “Basically, family members congregate before they come over for Iftar at about 7.15pm. The increase in numbers is about 5 to 10 per cent for our business."
