North East CDC raises S$1m for needy residents

A charity golf and dinner event organised by the North East Community Development Council raised S$1 million for needy residents in the North East District.

SINGAPORE: A charity golf and dinner event organised by the North East Community Development Council (CDC) raised S$1 million for needy residents in the North East District.

Some 70 organisations and 64 individual donors had pledged S$400,000 towards the cause.

The amount was matched dollar for dollar by the North East CDC.

The dinner on Wednesday raised a further S$100,000 which, when matched, will bring the total to S$1 million.

This was done through a charity auction, with art works donated by six Singaporean artists for the first time.

The money will go towards the North East School Meal Fund and the WeCare @ North East Fund.

Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean said: "With your support, we hope to help some 4,000 needy families in the North East District through these two funds each year.

"Through these and other programmes, we strengthen the community bonds in the district and help to take care of fellow Singaporeans who need more assistance during a difficult period in their lives."
