SINGAPORE: Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Italian-based aerospace firm Finmeccanica signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Thursday morning (Feb 18) to set up Singapore’s first research centre for helicopter production and technology.
The five-year deal aims to expose both undergraduate and post-graduate students to high-tech aerospace development and expand Singapore’s research in the area.
Projects will focus on rotary wing technology, including using new composite materials to build helicopters, and aerodynamics modeling to improve overall flight performance.
“We are happy to join forces with NTU in such complex technological field,” said Managing Director of Finmeccanica’s helicopter division, Daniele Romiti. “During the course of 2016, we plan to evaluate these opportunities, establish a plan for research activities and define the structural details of our cooperation through the proposed joint technology research centre.”
NTU said the collaboration is expected to boost Singapore’s aerospace industry, and is also “well-aligned” with the Government’s Research, Innovation, and Enterprise (RIE) 2020 plan, which will focus on advanced manufacturing research over the next five years.
