SINGAPORE: The National University of Singapore Society (NUSS) on Saturday (June 7) celebrated its 60th anniversary with its biggest community outreach to date.
More than 130 vehicles and 550 volunteers distributed food and household items to 3,000 needy households across five Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs) – West Coast GRC, Marine Parade GRC, Sembawang GRC, Tampines GRC and Tanjong Pagar GRC. Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Lawrence Wong, the event’s guest of honour, flagged off the convoy of vehicles from NUSS Kent Ridge Guild House.
Called Groceries with Love on Wheels (GLOW), the community outreach programme was organised in collaboration with the People’s Association PMET Division.
"For us to be an inclusive society, the spirit and actions of our people are very important... when the government gives assistance, it is not the same as the human touch of a volunteer,” Mr Wong said. “The government can send vouchers in the mail... but it is very different when ordinary Singaporeans make the effort to go to their homes to engage them and befriend them."
