Pet fair aims to promote responsible pet ownership

Pet Expo was launched by Minister of State for National Development Desmond Lee. The event is set against a projected increase in pet population in Singapore -- from 789,300 in 2011 to 824,300 in 2016, according to Euromonitor.

SINGAPORE: Singapore's largest pet fair opens at the Singapore Expo from Friday to Sunday.

Pet Expo was launched by Minister of State for National Development Desmond Lee.

The event is set against a projected increase in pet population in Singapore -- from 789,300 in 2011 to 824,300 in 2016, according to Euromonitor.

A series of talks, workshops and demonstrations will be held for pet owners and animal lovers to learn more about pet ownership.

Mr Jason Ng, project director of Pet Expo, said: "We expect that there will be increased demand for quality pet products and services, but equally important is there will also be this need for more educational efforts to promote responsible pet ownership, as well as animal welfare. This is to prevent a possible corresponding increase in pet abuse and abandonment cases."
