Peter Gilchrist, Shayna Ng win sports awards

The best in local sports were honoured at the Singapore Sports Awards 2014 ceremony on Saturday evening.

SINGAPORE: The best in local sports were honoured at the Singapore Sports Awards 2014 ceremony on Saturday evening.

Unlike last year, this time there was a winner for the Sportsman of the Year award.

Peter Gilchrist from cue sports edged out swimmer Joseph Schooling to win the Sportsman of the Year award.

Victory at the 2013 World Billiards Championships helped 45-year old Gilchrist clinch his first Sportsman of the Year title.

Bowler Shayna Ng won her first Sportswoman of the Year award. The 24-year-old was up against paddler Feng Tianwei, who beat her to the title in 2013.

Ng was nominated for her 2013 win at the DHC International Bowling Championship in Nagoya, Japan.

Bowler Muhammad Jaris Goh was named Sportsboy of the Year, while the Sportsgirl of the Year award went to equestrian rider Janine Khoo.

Babella Balazs from canoeing won Coach of the Year.

Low Lin Fhoong of TODAY newspaper won the award for Most Inspiring Sports Story for her article on "Navy Man's 1.67m Dream".
