PM Lee congratulates Indonesia's Joko Widodo on election win

In a Facebook post, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong wrote he was “looking forward to working with (Mr Widodo) to strength Indonesia-Singapore friendship”.

SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has congratulated Joko Widodo on winning the Indonesia election.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday (July 22), Mr Lee said that he was “looking forward to working with (Mr Widodo) to strength Indonesia-Singapore friendship.”

The Jakarta governor popularly known as Jokowi was declared the winner of Indonesia's closely-fought presidential race on Tuesday. The country's elections commission said Mr Widodo got 53.15 per cent of the vote, compared to his rival ex-general Prabowo Subianto's roughly 47 per cent - a margin of about 8.4 million votes.

With a voter turn-out of almost 70 per cent, more than 133 million ballots were collated from across the archipelago nation.
