SINGAPORE: There has been a very positive response to the Cultural Matching Fund, which provides dollar-for-dollar matching for donations made to arts and heritage organisations. The first round for applications closed at the end of May, and saw 30 applications totalling more than S$10 million.
Minster for Culture, Community and Youth Lawrence Wong spoke about the fund on Thursday (July 17), at the Patron Of The Arts Awards ceremony. The event saw 91 individuals and 253 organisations honoured for their efforts in promoting and developing Singapore's arts landscape.
One third of this year's awardees are first-time donors, and almost 70 of these were corporations. Construction and engineering company Gennal Industries was among the first-time awardees. It received the Patron of the Arts Award for its maiden contribution to Singapore Dance Theatre’s new home at Bugis+.
In total, private contributions to the arts in 2013 amounted to S$32.2 million, and donors hailed from a wide spectrum of industries, including the financial, retail and technology sectors. Beyond monetary contributions, donors were also recognised for their support in providing spaces and professional services.
