SINGAPORE: A group of seniors led an underwater ceremony at Underwater World Singapore (UWS) on Tuesday (Aug 4) to celebrate the nation’s Golden Jubilee.
In a pledge to continue contributing to Singapore, two senior volunteers in their 60s from RSVP Singapore – The Organisation of Senior Volunteers, who had never dived before, took the plunge into the Underwater Tunnel at UWS. They were Mr Lim Buan Teng, 65, and Mr Lai Chong Kian, 63.

“Despite not having dived before, they were game to take up the challenge and were able to put up an underwater performance for Singapore’s Golden Jubilee. Their spirit is admirable and we have much to learn from our seniors,” said UWS curator Anthony Chang.
Together with long-serving UWS divers in their 50s and 60s, the senior volunteers in the tank joined their fellow senior volunteers on the tunnel pathway to piece together a birthday message for Singapore.
Thirty disadvantaged elderly from Whampoa, who were brought on a tour to UWS by RSVP senior volunteers, also joined in the ceremony by waving mini flags.

As a gesture of appreciation to Singapore’s pioneers, Pioneer Generation card holders will get free admission to UWS during the four-day National Day weekend from Aug 7 to 10.
