Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was elected as Turkey's first directly-elected President on Sunday (Aug 10).

SINGAPORE: President Tony Tan Keng Yam and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong have written to congratulate Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan for becoming the first directly-elected President of his country, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in a statement on Tuesday (Aug 12).

Dr Tan's letter to Mr Erdogan, dated August 11, reads as follows:

On behalf of the people of Singapore, I warmly congratulate you on your election as the President of the Republic of Turkey. I am confident that under your leadership, Turkey will continue to progress and prosper.

Your Excellency’s visit to Singapore in January 2014 has boosted bilateral cooperation between Singapore and Turkey. With your strong support, we started negotiations on a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement. We look forward to an early conclusion of the agreement, which we believe will put our fast-growing economic cooperation on an even firmer footing. We also hope to work closely with you in matters of mutual interest at international platforms, including the G20 Leaders Summit which Turkey will host in 2015. I am confident that with your continuing support, the relationship between our two countries will continue to flourish and reach new heights.

I wish you every success as you lead Turkey forward and hope to welcome you in Singapore again in your new capacity.

Yours sincerely,

TONY TAN KENG YAM

In his letter to Mr Erdogan, dated August 11, Mr Lee wrote:

Congratulations on your election as the first directly-elected President of the Republic of Turkey. Your decisive victory reflects the confidence of your people in your leadership, and their support for your vision for the country.

I appreciate your personal commitment to relations between Singapore and Turkey. Your visit to Singapore in January, and your agreement to conclude a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement, significantly boosted our relations. I look forward to continue working with you to deepen cooperation across many sectors, including in aviation, finance and the G20.

I wish you every success in your new appointment, and hope to visit Turkey soon.

Yours sincerely,

LEE HSIEN LOONG
