SMRT will bring in 700 Prius Hybrid taxis by March next year, doubling its hybrid taxi fleet from 600 to 1,300.
SINGAPORE: SMRT Corporation on Friday (Aug 22) announced that it will double its Prius Hybrid taxi fleet from the current 600 to 1,300 by March next year.
A first batch of 400 taxis will be introduced by the end of September, while the remaining 300 will be brought in by end-March 2015, SMRT said in a statement.
Taxi driver Vincent Yap said he switched to the Prius in October 2013 because of its environmentally-friendly features. “It has helped me save on fuel costs and, at the same time, make a responsible contribution to travelling on Singapore roads,” said the 54-year-old.
SMRT also said it has sealed a deal with ExxonMobil to extend more petrol savings to its drivers. SMRT taxi drivers with the Esso Smiles Card will enjoy a discount when topping up their petrol. From Aug 1 to Oct 31, they will also get an additional S$1 off with every S$20 of petrol purchase.
