Some 55,000 students will participate in 28 sports, making the annual National School Games the most extensive inter-school competition.

SINGAPORE: Some 55,000 students will participate in 28 sports, making the annual National School Games the most extensive inter-school competition.

The largest youth sports event in Singapore opened on Thursday.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Education Minister Heng Swee Keat also emphasised the importance of safety during sport, after the recent deaths of two students during physical education (PE) lessons.

Mr Heng said: "We must pay attention to safety, starting from young. Students should also look out for one another.

"Teachers should know their students well, and keep themselves updated on how to organise safe and robust PE classes. Safety is everyone's responsibility."
