Synchronised breastfeeding event to highlight benefits of latching on

Organisers of the event, which is part of the wider Global Big Latch On, are expecting about 80 mothers to participate this Saturday (Aug 2).

SINGAPORE: Four food and beverage (F&B) outlets in Singapore will host the local edition of the Big Latch On on Saturday (August 2).

The Singapore edition is organised by the Breastfeeding Mothers’ Support Group, and it is expecting about 80 mothers to take part in Saturday’s event. The four locations are:

  • Yahava Koffeeworks (7 Jalan Gelenggang)
  • Fika Café (257 Beach Road/Arab Street)
  • Real Food (110 Killiney Road)
  • Da Paolo Gastronomia (43 Jalan Merah Saga 01-74)

Participants will be part of the wider global synchronised breastfeeding event, which aims to raise awareness of the benefits of latching on. Organisers of the event are hoping to break the current Global Big Latch On record of 14,536 this year.

The Big Latch On takes place during World Breast Feeding Week (Aug 1-7), which is celebrated in 120 countries. The week commemorates the Innocenti Declaration on the benefits of breastfeeding, which was issued by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children's Fund in 1990.

The first Big Latch On event took place in New Zealand in 2005, and the event aims to provide an opportunity for breastfeeding women to get together in their local communities and receive mutual support.
