Three sailors to represent Singapore at Youth Olympic Games

The trio said they were prepared to give their all for the Games, despite having to balance studies with hectic training schedules.

SINGAPORE: Three young sailors will represent Singapore at the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Nanjing, China. Bernie Chin and Samantha Yom, both 15, will represent the Republic in the Byte CII class. Ynez Lim, 16, will do so in her Bic Techno in a week's time.

The trio said they were prepared to give their all for the Games, despite having to balance studies with hectic training schedules.

While the Singapore Sailing Federation did not set any medal targets for the YOG, its president, Dr Ben Tan, said the competition is an opportunity for them to develop their character, as they compete with their peers from around the world. "We are sending an exemplary team to be the face of Singapore at the Games. Medals are secondary at this (YOG) level," he said.

Dr Tan also shared that the federation has long-term plans in place for the trio after the YOG in Nanjing. The announcements were made on the sidelines of a S$40,000 sponsorship deal with watchmaker Seiko, both in cash and in-kind. They join Audi, DBS Bank and Fish and Co. as the fourth sponsor of the Sailing Federation over the last three years.
