SINGAPORE: Two Singapore students have emerged as the winner and runner-up in the annual Angus Ross Prize for outstanding performance in A-Level Literature in English.

The winner was Yang Shu Rui Claire from Hwa Chong Institution while Victoria Junior College's Sheldon Anthony Lim Wei Jie was the runner-up.

Both sat for their examinations in 2013.

In selecting the winner, a panel of senior examiners used various criteria, including maturity of thought and brilliance of expression in students' scripts.

Each year, about 12,000 entries are received worldwide from candidates outside the United Kingdom.

Singapore students have won the prize almost every year since it began in November 1987.
