SINGAPORE : The People's Action Party (PAP) Chairman Khaw Boon Wan has said voters in Hougang have been misled by the Workers' Party.
He was speaking to reporters just hours after the Workers' Party expelled Hougang's MP Yaw Shin Leong.
Mr Khaw said it is a sad development to learn that a Member of Parliament had been found by his party to be insufficient in character and had to be expelled from his party.
Mr Khaw said that once a person enters politics, there is no difference between his or her public and private life.
He believes that voters take into account a person's character when they go to the polls.
He noted that rumours about Mr Yaw's alleged extramarital affair have been circulating for quite some time.
Mr Khaw said: "The Workers' Party needs to come clean with the people what information have they got about Mr Yaw and in particular, what did they know about him prior to the May election. And if they know, why did they field Mr Yaw. I think it is sad that the voters have been misled by the Workers Party."
When asked how the PAP would approach the possible by-election in Hougang, Mr Khaw said that the party has never forsaken its supporters and voters.
He said the party will do whatever it can to win back the Hougang seat.
When asked if Desmond Choo will be fielded again in Hougang, Mr Khaw said the party will take one step at a time.
