OCBC Bank will call for tenders on Tuesday for both the cycling event in Singapore and Malaysia, after ending its relationship with previous organiser Spectrum Worldwide.
SINGAPORE: A new event organiser is wanted to help OCBC Bank refresh its OCBC Cycle events in Singapore and Malaysia, the bank said on Monday (July 21).
OCBC said it is looking to work with a new event organiser to "deliver a new concept for OCBC Cycle in 2015" and make sure the event continues to be the "premier cycling event in Singapore and Malaysia".
It will call for a tender on Tuesday, July 22, and interested organisers must submit their bids by Aug 6, the statement added.
The Malaysia leg of the cycling event will continue to be held at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur, and will be launched in the last quarter of this year. Details on OCBC Cycle 2015 will be shared at that time, the bank said.
It added the Singapore Sports Hub, of which OCBC is the premier founding member, will be used to stage the refreshed cycling event here.
PARTING OF WAYS
The previous event organiser for OCBC Cycle in Singapore and Malaysia was Spectrum Worldwide. Earlier this month, TODAY reported that OCBC and Spectrum Worldwide parted ways. The latter's Managing Director Chris Robb said: "OCBC will not be sponsoring the event moving ahead and we are in the process of talking to potential new partners."
It is understood that the split between the local bank and the event organiser happened after this year's race ended with the tragic death of one of the riders in an accident. However, neither party confirmed or denied that the end of the commercial agreement had anything to do with the incident, according to the TODAY report.
The original event, Cycle Singapore, will still be held next year from April 10 to 12 without its long-time title sponsor. Dates for OCBC Cycle 2015 have not been confirmed.
In a separate report published on Monday, TODAY said that two local firms - Hi-Velocity and Orange Room - are interested in helping organise the OCBC event next year.
Hi-Velocity has helped organise the Sundown Marathon, the first Sundown Malaysia this year, and the Aviva 70.3 Ironman Singapore. Orange Room runs the TRI-Factor Series.
