SINGAPORE: With the right environment and government policies, today's generation will pass on qualities such as resilience and other good values passed down by Singapore's Pioneer Generation, said MP for Ang Mo Kio GRC, Mr Ang Hin Kee, in Parliament on Monday (May 26).
"Today, we celebrate what the Pioneer Generation have toiled for ... they gave us the Singapore we live in," he said, adding that his encounters with Singaporeans have convinced him that the values of the past have been upheld by the newer generations.
In his speech, Mr Ang highlighted the many examples of bonds in residential estates "similar to the old kampung stories shared by seniors", such as neighbours sharing resources and offering to take care of each other’s children at playgrounds.
He urged the Government to create more spaces for people and families to bond, and where neighbours can "bump into one another and strike up conversations".
On the topic of self-reliance, Mr Ang noted that the Pioneer Generation's "never say die spirit, especially at the workplace, transformed Singapore to what it is today".
While the Government should assist as much as it can, and create opportunities for everyone to have access to the help that is available, "it is up to individuals to take ownership to improve and better their lives and that of their families", he said.
