Work with international community in a peaceful way, ESM Goh urges China

Impetus for ASEAN and China to enhance cooperation remains strong, says Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong.

SINGAPORE: As China’s influence in regional and global affairs grows, it is expected that the country will also be more vocal and active in shaping its external environment, said Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong on Thursday (July 17).

However, he sounded a cautionary note, urging China to “play its role in a way that makes it welcomed by all”.

“This means working with the international community to make the existing world order better for all, including China, in a peaceful and non-disruptive way. I believe China sees it in its own interests to work within and help to preserve existing international norms and structures which have underpinned growth and prosperity,” he added.

Mr Goh said although there are differences between some ASEAN countries and China over overlapping territorial claims, all parties concerned are seeking to manage these differences through dialogue.

He added that the impetus for ASEAN and China to enhance cooperation remains strong, and it can be deepened “through a range of win-win partnerships”.

Mr Goh was giving the keynote speech at the opening plenary session FutureChina Global Forum 2014, which was attended by more than 60 leading international experts on China issues.

Vice Chairman of Boao Forum for Asia and Former Vice Premier of China Zeng Peiyan also gave a keynote speech, in which he spoke on China’s ever-changing landscape and laid out an analysis of China’s economic strategy.
