Golf: Malaysia take narrow advantage in Prudential

Malaysia took a narrow advantage on the opening day of the second Prudential Causeway Trophy on Friday (June 20).

SINGAPORE: Malaysia took a narrow advantage on the opening day of the second Prudential Causeway Trophy on Friday (June 20).

Singapore won the inaugural matchplay tournament last year by a resounding 15.5-8.5 margin over the Malaysians.

Playing at the same venue this time -- the Laguna National Golf and Country Club -- the host were upstaged by their northern rivals.

Shaaban Hussin's eagle-three at the par-five 18th hole provided a dramatic finale to Friday's matches, which secured the Malaysian and his partner Sukree Othman a tense one-hole win over Lam Chih Bing and Lam Zhi Qun.

This gave the visitors a 3 1/2- 2 1/2 advantage heading into Saturday's contest.

The three-day Ryder Cup-style competition will reach its climax with 12 singles clashes on Sunday.
