Thailand's Panuphol Pittayarat maintained his one-shot lead in the second round of the US$1.5 million The Championship at Laguna National Golf and Country Club on Friday.
SINGAPORE: Thailand's Panuphol Pittayarat maintained his one-shot lead in the second round of the US$1.5 million The Championship at Laguna National Golf and Country Club on Friday.
The 21-year-old shot a 4-under to close with a 13-under-par 131 total.
Nicknamed "coconut", Panuphol was not as fruitful on the Masters course, notching five birdies and one bogey.
The hot weather affected his hot putter from the previous round, when he reeled off nine birdies.
One of the country's upcoming stars after turning professional at 14, Panuphol is pleased to be in a good position heading into the weekend.
"It was tough to focus out there with the heat and sweating, and I was drained, but managed to finish strong and still in the lead," he said.
Singapore's Lam Chih Bing was among 72 players who made the cut, which was set at four-under.
Starting the day on a 1-under par, Lam's eagle and six birdies helped him to post a six-under second-round score.
But it was the opposite for another Singaporean Quincy Quek, who was in joint-second after the first round.
He was unable to repeat his scintillating form from Thursday, when he shot eight birdies.
Three bogeys saw him finishing his day with a score of two-over, for a six-under total after two rounds.
"I don't really think there should be any link between what happened yesterday and today. Obviously yesterday I got quite lucky with some putts but overall I was striking the ball, today I was hitting it okay but the putts were not dropping," Quincy said.
