Motor Rally: Latvala leads Ogier in Rally of Argentina

Finland's Jari-Matti Latvala was heading for victory in the Rally of Argentina on Saturday when he opened up a 30-second lead on Volkswagen Polo teammate and world champion Sebastien Ogier.

CORDOBA, Argentina: Finland's Jari-Matti Latvala was heading for victory in the Rally of Argentina on Saturday when he opened up a 30-second lead on Volkswagen Polo teammate and world champion Sebastien Ogier.

Despite a spin and heavy fog, Latvala kept Ogier at bay after four of the day's stages with the Citroen DS3 of Britain's Kris Meeke holding third place, but 3 minutes 40 seconds off the searing pace of the lead Volkswagen.

Latvala has won five of the race's nine stages so far with two more to be contested later Saturday.

"It's been one of my best performances. A day like this when everything goes right, it's a super sensation," said the Finn.

So far this season, Latvala has won the Rally of Sweden but Ogier has been the man to beat, having won in Monte Carlo, Mexico and Portugal.

Ogier leads the championship with 91 points from Latvala on 62.

"Latvala is going to be very hard to catch. I don't want to take risks. If the title was at stake, then I would take more risks," said Ogier.
