Former water polo vice-captain Yip Ren Kai will chair the Commission, which aims to help advise the Singapore National Olympic Council on athlete development and life after sports.
SINGAPORE: The Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) has appointed a former water polo vice-captain and an ex-fencing exponent to lead the Athletes' Commission for the next three years.
In a statement on Monday (June 2), the SNOC said Mr Yip Ren Kai has been appointed as Chairperson for the new term, while Ms Ruth Ng will function as the Vice Chairperson. Former Sportswoman of the Year, Ms Jasmine Yeong-Nathan was also appointed as Honorary Secretary during the meeting to elect the office bearers last Saturday.
The full list of office bearers for the 2014-2017 term are:
Yip Ren Kai (Water polo) – Chairperson
Ruth Ng (Fencing) – Vice Chairperson
Jasmine Yeong-Nathan (Bowling) – Honorary Secretary
Mark Chay (Swimming)
Dipna Lim-Prasad (Athletics)
Lim Heem Wei (Gymnastics)
Annabelle Ng (Canoeing)
Ng PeiRu (Karate)
Jasmine Ser (Shooting)
Aqilah Binte Sudhir (Shooting)
Derek Wong (Badminton)
Mr Yip said in the statement that the commission is working with various stakeholders on how to help current athletes in their careers and life after sports, as it formalises its short- and long-term goals.
"Former athletes such as Mark Chay, Ruth Ng, Ng PeiRu and I have managed to successfully move to the workforce after sports," he said.
"Athletes such as Derek Wong, Jasmine Yeong-Nathan and Dipna Lim-Prasad are currently juggling sports, work and studies. I hope with our skill sets and experience, we are able to help athletes and be a fair voice for them in the SNOC."
