SINGAPORE: Team Alinghi of Switzerland emerged victorious in the Singapore leg of the Extreme Sailing Series at Marina Bay on Sunday, beating the defending champions, The Wave, Muscat, by 24 points.

On Saturday, spectators at the series saw a nasty crash involving local team Aberdeen and French outfit Groupama.

The extremely strong winds this year, while making for exciting sailing, were partly the cause of the accident.

But there was no such drama on Sunday, with Swiss team Alinghi emerging as the overall winner with 217 points from 29 races.

Defending champions The Wave, Muscat finished second and another Swiss boat Realstone ended third with 178 points.

Singapore's entry, Team Aberdeen, with two Singaporean sailors onboard, was 11th overall.

Singapore is the first of eight stops for the 2014 series, which next moves to Muscat, Oman in March.
