Table Tennis: Singapore triumph in women's world team championships

Singapore's Feng Tianwei led the women's team to a 3-0 victory over Luxembourg, but Gao Ning and his teammates lost by the same margin to Germany in the men's event.

SINGAPORE: It was a day of mixed fortunes for Singapore on Monday at the World Team Table Tennis Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

Singapore's Feng Tianwei led the women's team to a 3-0 victory over Luxembourg, but Gao Ning and his teammates lost by the same margin to Germany in the men's event.

World number seven Feng swept aside her opponent Sarah De Nutte 3-1.

Yu Mengyu suffered a scare before overcoming Ni Xialian 3-2.

Isabelle Li then sealed Singapore's victory with a 3-1 score against Tessy Gonderinger.

In the men's event, Gao Ning lost 3-1 to Timo Boll.

Yang Zi then found himself at the receiving end of a 3-0 rout by Dimitrij Ovtcharov.

The match ended when Clarence Chew lost 3-1 to Steffen Mengel.
