Tennis: Murray receives wildcard for Rotterdam event

World number six Andy Murray will compete in the ATP tournament in Rotterdam next week after receiving a wildcard, organisers confirmed on Friday.

ROTTERDAM: World number six Andy Murray will compete in the ATP tournament in Rotterdam next week after receiving a wildcard, organisers confirmed on Friday.

The Wimbledon champion, who is fighting to recover his best form after a back operation, is set to feature alongside the likes of last year's winner Juan Martin Del Potro and Tomas Berdych.

Murray, who lost in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in January to Roger Federer, is scheduled to play in Acapulco later this month before the higher-profile tournaments at Indian Wells and Miami.

"Last week I contacted Andy Murray and his management," said Rotterdam tournament director Richard Krajicek.

"Because he didn't have a tournament planned between Australian Open and Acapulco and came back from Australia free from physical issues, it seemed like a good idea to both of us if he came to Rotterdam.

"After consultation with his coach Ivan Lendl he decided. Obviously this is a great addition to our already very strong field. An excellent opportunity."

The Scot has won the Rotterdam title once before, beating Rafael Nadal in the final in 2009.
