The World University Floorball Championship, the first international event at the OCBC Arena, officially kicked-off on Wednesday.

SINGAPORE: Singapore is hosting the World University Floorball Championship, the first international event to be held at the OCBC Arena.

Ten men's and six women's teams are competing in the five-day tournament, which officially kicked off on Wednesday.

Singapore has two teams making their debut at the competition which is being staged outside Europe for the first time.

A few of the Singapore players are also part of the national team.

As such, the championship will also be a good tune-up for them ahead of the 2015 SEA Games where floorball will make its debut in the biennial multi-sport event.

Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Lawrence Wong said: "In 2016, Singapore will be hosting the ASEAN University Games. This is the university games for 10 Southeast Asian countries.

"The sports for the games have not been decided yet, but we certainly hope that floorball will be one of the sports at the 2016 ASEAN University Games."
