Fresh US air strikes in northern Iraq

WASHINGTON: The United States has carried out more air strikes in Iraq, a senior US defence official said on Wednesday (Aug 20), after a threat by Islamic militants to execute a second US journalist.

"There have been additional strikes since yesterday," the official, who asked not to be identified, told AFP. The official said the air strikes were conducted in northern Iraq where a US air campaign has targeted Islamic State forces threatening civilian refugees and the Kurdish regional capital Arbil.

In apparent retaliation, IS beheaded a captive US journalist James Foley, shown in footage posted online on Tuesday, and threatened to execute another reporter who was shown alive in the video.

Meanwhile the White House said US President Barack Obama will make a statement at 12.45pm Wednesday (1645 GMT).
