Illness with Ebola-like symptoms reportedly kills several in Congo

Several people have died in the Democratic Republic of Congo from an illness with symptoms similar to the deadly Ebola virus, said a local official.

KINSHASA: Several people have died in the Democratic Republic of Congo from an illness with symptoms similar to the deadly Ebola virus, said a local official on Wednesday (Aug 20). According to Reuters, the health minister and experts have been sent to the remote Equateur province following the deaths.

“An illness is spreading in Boende but we don’t know the origin,” said Michel Wangi, a spokesman for the government office. It was not clear if the illness had any link to Ebola, which has killed more than a thousand people in Africa. The delegation has been tasked to find "the exact nature of the illness".

An Equateur resident told Reuters that about 10 people had died after suffering from fever, diarrhoea and bleeding – symptoms of Ebola.

Congo does not share a border with any of the Ebola-hit countries in Africa. There is currently no known vaccine against the virus.
