OTTAWA: A jockey and horse died during a practice run at the Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto early Tuesday after the horse suffered a medical attack, fell and crushed the rider.

Toronto Police spokeswoman Constable Jenniferjit Sidhu told AFP the jockey at 6am (1000 GMT) "was in the saddle when the horse went into an unexplained wild gallop.

"The jockey was crushed into the track railing and then by the weight of the horse," she said.

"Something medical happened to the horse and the jockey was just at the wrong place at the wrong time," she added.

Paramedics pronounced the rider dead at the scene. The horse also died in the incident on a secondary track.

The coroner and the labour ministry are investigating.
