The Shard in London, western Europe's tallest building, was evacuated Thursday as firefighters investigated reports of smoke at the glass-clad tower.

LONDON: The Shard in London, western Europe's tallest building, was evacuated Thursday as firefighters investigated reports of smoke at the glass-clad tower.

The London Fire Brigade said firefighters were investigating claims of smoke in the basement of the building that dominates the London skyline.

However, they said in a statement there were no immediate signs of fire.

"As a precaution the building is being evacuated," LFB said in a statement.

Scores of workers left the 310-metre (1,016-foot) building following the order to evacuate.

The Shard hosts restaurants, a luxury hotel and offices.
