SAO PAULO: A construction worker was killed on Monday after part of a monorail collapsed in World Cup host country Brazil, just days ahead of the football tournament.

According to Sky News, the man was apparently working on an extension to the metro network in Sao Paulo when he was hit by a concrete support beam.

BBC News said at least two others were injured in the incident, citing local authorities.

The 17.7km monorail was supposed to be up and running for the World Cup, but construction is behind schedule.

When completed, the line will connect Congonhas airport to three metro lines.

Eight workers have died in accidents during the construction of the 12 World Cup arenas in Brazil.
