It seemed just another Tuesday afternoon for workers in and around the Beach Road area with construction underway for the MRT Circle Line.

Without warning, the world around them seemed to cave-in. Drivers on Nicoll Highway saw the road in front of them collapse away.

The collapse of a temporary wall in a tunnel area had caused a road section along Nicoll Highway to cave in, leaving three dead and three injured.

Search and rescue operations for the last missing person - 40-year-old foreman Heng Yeow Peow - have been called off as recent soil movement around the area had made rescue operations difficult.

LTA engineers have been working to firm up the ground and has introduced new material to shore up the site.

Meanwhile, the Nicoll Highway has been partially reopened to traffic, restoring access into the National Stadium area, including the Singapore Indoor Stadium and the Kallang Theatre (see map on right).

The section of Nicoll Highway, between Middle Road and Stadium Road, remains closed to traffic. Directional signs are in place to inform motorists of the diversions and closures.

According to the Land Transport Authority, earlier excavation works at the MRT Circle Line work site along Nicoll Highway near the Merdeka Bridge, behind Golden Mile Complex, collapsed at about 3.30 pm.

This resulted in major soil subsidence along the highway.

The collapse left a 30-metre deep cave-in across six lanes of Nicoll Highway, over an area the size of two basketball courts.

No motorists were travelling along the usually congested highway when the collapse happened.
