Section Of Merdeka Bridge To Be Cut

Update on incident along Nicoll Highway

It is our intention to open Crawford Underpass soon, but before we can do so, the section of Merdeka Bridge nearest to the incident site will have to be cut off. This will ensure that there will be no stress on Merdeka Bridge when Crawford Underpass opens.

We would like to emphasise that the Merdeka Bridge is safe. LTA has been monitoring the area around the Merdeka Bridge and Crawford Underpass regularly and there are no further ground movements in the area around the Merdeka Bridge and Crawford Underpass.

The 610-m long Merdeka Bridge is supported by 26 piers that are about 24 m apart. LTA will be cutting the platform of the Merdeka Bridge 24.5m away from the end at the joint above pier 2.

This is to isolate the first span of the Merdeka Bridge from the rest of the bridge. This will reduce the stress on the remaining part of the bridge as the first pier is adjacent to the incident site.

The Merdeka Bridge was opened in 1956. It is 610 m long and 30 wide, spanning over the Crawford Underpass. Nicoll Highway runs from the junction with Stamford Road until the junction with Mountbatten Road, passing over the Merdeka Bridge.

LTA would like to assure the public that we are doing all that we can to ensure the safety of the surrounding area and return the situation to normal. Given the extent of this incident, the repair works may take some time. We would like to seek the public's understanding on this.
