Additional Measures To Improve
Safety At Nicoll Highway And Other LTA Work Sites
Joint Press Statement By Land Transport Authority
and Building & Construction Authority
Additional safety checks at other LTA worksites
LTA has asked all our contractors working on the construction
of Circle Line (CCL) and the Kallang/Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE)
to carry out additional checks and further review on the design
of all temporary works. For examples, struts, diaphragm walls and
the design of any other temporary retaining structures. This review
is expected to complete within two to three days.
Our project engineers will also carry out additional
checks to ensure that all excavation works are carried out according
to the required specifications. These include reviewing the adequacy
of the soil instrumentation plan and the frequency of monitoring,
and ensuring that qualified or registered surveyors take the readings.
BCA assesses surrounding buildings to be safe
Immediately after the incident, BCA's engineers were
activated to inspect the Golden Mile Complex, Golden Mile Tower
and The Concourse, which are in the vicinity of the incident site.
So far, our assessment revealed that the structural stability of
the buildings is not affected by the cave-in. There is also no evidence
of structural distress or settlement in the buildings.
Upon BCA's instruction, LTA has installed additional
monitoring instruments at various points in these buildings as well
as increased the frequency of the monitoring. This is to monitor
for any soil movement and ground settlement around the buildings,
including changes to the tilt of the critical structure and width
of old cracks.
"BCA has also stationed engineers round the clock
to carry out continuous inspections and checks on the buildings.
To date, the monitoring results of the instrumentation indicate
that the buildings are stable." said Mr Ong Chan Leng, Director
(Building Engineering Division), BCA.
BCA will continue to work with LTA to conduct continuous
checks on the structural integrity of the surrounding buildings.
Update on incident along Nicoll Highway
LTA continues to pump concrete into the ground around
the incident site at Nicoll Highway, so as to stabilise the ground
and prevent water seepage. We would like to assure the public that
we are taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of the
surrounding area.
The works at all the other LTA work sites are not
affected and we will continue to monitor all the activities closely
to ensure safety at the sites.
